Calendar System and different types of calendars

There are several calendars that is used in India. The Indian government uses the Gregorian calendar for the administrative purposes. The Muslims uses the Muslim (Islamic) known as Hijri calendar. The Indian solar and lunisolar calendars, including their variations, are used for both civil and religious purposes and hence exert great influence on the daily activities of the people of India. The Calendars are classified as:

1. Solar calendars
2. Luni-solar Calendars
3. Lunar Calendars
4. Astronomical and Arithmetical calendars

Calendar Systems used around India

 A calendar is a system of organizing units of time for the purpose of reckoning time over extended period. The natural units of time are the day, the month and the year. They are based on the Earth’s rotation on its axis, the Moon’s revolution around the Earth and the Earth’s revolution around the Sun respectively.  There are mainly Four typs of calendars in India:

1. Saka Samvat
2. Vikram Samvat
3. Hijri/Hijra Calendar
4. Gregorian Calendar

Indian Calendar (Panchang), variations on dates according to religion and geographical differences

The Punchanga (Indian Calenders) use mostly 4 type of calendars , sake (salivahana), vikram samvat, hijri and gregorian in Hindi speaking areas while the regional calender for the perticulat region i.e in Bengal a day is referenced according to the Bengali calender. and so on…ther are variations on date calculations and new year day but most of indian calendars are a part of national calendar and are revised as par the regional culture and language.
